IMG_0006Two weeks ago we were very proud to be part of a week-long pop up at the Wilson Gallery called Yay for Play!  The event was the brain child of both local blogger CheltenhamMaman – Kate Starkey, and also husband and wife team Georgina and Andy Thorne from Play.

Kowalah was present to help mark our launch into Cheltenham and we spent the week with a number of our sitters present each day helping mums have a few minutes of peace and quiet to enjoy a warm drink, or browse the stands provided by local craft and service providers.

Across the week over 300 families came through the doors, they were able to test out the experience and provide their feedback on this new style of activity and play for parents with young children.  The plan is for Georgina and Andy of Play to take this concept forward and for it to become a permanent fixture on the Cheltenham parenting scene!

For us it was a great opportunity to speak with local mums and dads and explain how Kowalah works.  For anyone hearing about us for the first time (especially a first time parent that hasn’t left their child with anyone outside of their family before) there are rightful concerns about how we find and interview all the sitters and continue to ensure trust and safety on the platform.

We’re proud to be able to say we interview every single sitter that joins the platform, as well as getting two written references from their previous childcare experience.  It is not possible to just ‘sign up and go’ as a sitter on Kowalah.

There is no better way of answering the parent’s questions than having 2 or 3 Kowalahs on hand to talk about their background, their certifications, DBS checks and more than anything – just to see them laughing and helping out the other children at the event.

For those that weren’t at the event – we have a blog post that explains how we interview every sitter here: How we ensure you get a great sitter every time.

IMG_0007On the final day we headed out onto the streets of Cheltenham to meet other families and get their feedback.  It was great to spend time answering questions and seeing the signups appear on our systems.

One of the key conversations is about daytime services.  We spent time discussing with parents that day time bookings are in many ways more critical than the evening service – support on morning school runs, help around the house during the day – especially if you are working from home, and after school pick-ups and help with home work.

Cheltenham is a wonderful town, with a host of fantastic restaurants and hotels, and we can’t wait to help more mums and dads get out safe in the knowledge they have on demand childcare from Kowalah whenever they need it.
